Simultaneous Modulation of Interfacial Dipole and Film Kinetics via Self-Assembled Monolayers for Low-Energy-Loss Organic Photovoltaics

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) enable precise tuning of the ITO/active layer interfacial dipole, yet their impact on the crystallization kinetics of the overlying active layer remains poorly understood, limiting their potential in high-efficiency organic solar cells. This study introduces THPC, a self-assembling material with an extended carbazole core and heteroatom substitution, as a hole transport layer (HTL). Unlike the hydrophilic PEDOT:PSS, THPC exhibits low surface energy, providing a favorable template that extends the film formation kinetics of the PM6:L8-BO-X blend by nearly 1.4 times, mitigating the explosive nucleation prevalent in PM6-based active layers. This promotes a highly ordered fibrous morphology and enhances vertical phase separation. The deep work function of THPC (5.32 eV) increases the built-in potential, reduces interfacial trap density, and facilitates charge extraction. Consequently, non-radiative recombination loss decreases from 0.243 eV to 0.227 eV, and the open-circuit voltage rises from 0.866 V to 0.883 V, yielding a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.19%, outperforming the PEDOT:PSS control (18.67%). This finding is confirmed across multiple Y-series acceptors, all approaching 20% PCE. Notably, the D18:L8-BO system achieves a PCE of 20.55%, demonstrating broad applicability.

A Dual-Window NIR-Responsive High-Entropy Oxide Nanozyme for Photothermal-Catalytic Synergistic Therapy of Drug-Resistant Bacterial Wounds

Chronic infections caused by biofilms of drug-resistant bacteria pose a significant challenge in clinical treatment. Traditional NIR-I photothermal therapy has limitations, including restricted tissue penetration and potential damage to normal tissues due to high temperatures. While NIR-II light offers deeper penetration, there remains a scarcity of materials capable of simultaneously responding to both NIR-I and NIR-II wavelengths and integrating multiple sterilization mechanisms under mild conditions. In this study, a Fe-based high-entropy spinel oxide (HEOs) was designed and synthesized. Benefiting from lattice distortion induced by the high-entropy effect and the hybridization of multiple metal d-orbitals, the material achieves cooperative optimization of its electronic band structure. Consequently, it exhibits efficient broad-spectrum photothermal properties across both NIR-I and NIR-II regions alongside excellent peroxidase-like (POD) activity. Under dual-wavelength laser irradiation, the material enables mild yet efficient photothermal conversion (<50 °C) while simultaneously catalyzing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to generate abundant hydroxyl radicals (·OH), thereby constructing a synergistic antibacterial system combining dual-window photothermal therapy and enzymatic catalysis. In vitro experiments confirmed that the HEOs possesses potent bactericidal and biofilm eradication capabilities against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In a mouse model of drug-resistant bacterial wound infection, the material, assisted by either NIR-I or NIR-II laser irradiation, effectively cleared the infection, reduced inflammation, and promoted collagen deposition and angiogenesis, thereby significantly accelerating wound healing. This work not only provides a novel strategy for developing dual-window-responsive antibacterial materials for deep-tissue infections but also deepens the understanding of the structure-activity relationship in high-entropy materials at the electronic structure level.

Ultra-sensitive ultraviolet organic photodetectors enabled by an expanded spectral window for health monitoring

Excessive ultraviolet (UV) radiation poses significant risks to human health, necessitating highly sensitive detection systems. Organic photodetectors (OPDs) offer high sensitivity and tunable spectral response, but their UV performance is constrained by conventional glass/indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates and electrodes, and insufficient photoactive layer responsivity. Here, we report high-performance UV-OPDs achieved through UV-transparent window and active-layer optimization. Replacing glass/ITO with a UV-transparent window comprising a quartz substrate and PH1000 electrode enhances UV transmittance. Integrating the high UV-responsive blend PM6:Y6:PC71BM as the active layer, the optimal ternary UV-OPD exhibits external quantum efficiency (EQE) exceeding 53% across 280–400 nm, with a peak EQE of 78.29% and responsivity of 214.68 mA/W at 340 nm, alongside a rapid response time of 2.6/2.1 μs. This performance represents the best combination of responsivity and response time reported to date in the UV region. We demonstrate the potential of these UV-OPDs for outdoor real-time UV monitoring. This work presents a promising strategy for developing high-performance UV-OPDs through transparent substrate and electrode engineering, and active-layer optimization.

Quasi-metal 2D Ag2Te nanosheets for high performance surface-enhanced Raman scattering detection

Semiconductor-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates have attracted significant attention due to their high uniformity, reproducibility, stability, and cost-effectiveness. However, the Raman enhancement in semiconductors primarily relies on the chemical mechanism (CM), which typically results in a lower enhancement capability compared to traditional noble metals. In this study, we developed a novel two-dimensional (2D) SERS substrate, Ag2Te nanosheets (NSs), synthesized through a simple one-step redox reaction utilizing 2D Te NSs as the template. The 2D Ag2Te NSs not only exhibit strong interfacial interactions with molecules, thereby supporting the CM, but also possess quasi-metallic properties with low resistivity (2.8 × 10−4 Ω cm) and high density of free electrons (4.15 × 10^22 cm−3), giving rise to a significant visible-region surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band and contributing to enormous electromagnetic mechanism (EM). By synergizing CM and EM, the 2D Ag2Te NSs SERS substrate achieved an ultra-low limit of detection (LOD) of 10−10 M with an enhancement factor (EF) of 2.6 × 10^7 for methylene blue (MB), outperforming most semiconductors, even rivaling noble metals. The quasi-metallic properties of 2D Ag2Te NSs also benefit their sensitivity to multiple molecules. The accuracy and reliability were demonstrated in real-sample detections with recoveries of 91.5%–108.3% for various target molecules. These excellent performances, combined with remarkable cost-effectiveness, demonstrate the potential of 2D Ag2Te NSs as a practical SERS substrate with broad applicability. Furthermore, the inherent structural simplicity of these nanosheets creates significant opportunities for further sophisticated nanostructural engineering to advance the SERS performance in the future.

Polarization-Sensitive Air-Stable Photodetector Based on Ternary Layered Compound FeIn2Se4

Layered chalcogenide compounds have attracted considerable attention for optoelectronic applications due to their rich structural diversity and unique physical properties, including high carrier mobility, ferromagnetism, ferroelectricity, and outstanding optoelectronic and thermoelectric performance. Their tunable bandgaps and strong light absorption render them highly suitable for next-generation photodetectors. However, the environmental instability of many 2D chalcogenides poses a critical challenge for practical applications. In this work, we report a high-performance, polarization-sensitive photodetector based on an air-stable ternary chalcogenide FeIn2Se4. Angle-resolved polarized Raman spectroscopy reveals that the four characteristic Raman modes exhibit a 60° periodic variation in intensity, highlighting the material's pronounced in-plane anisotropy. Benefiting from its strong absorption over a broad spectral range (510–1028 nm), the FeIn2Se4-based device demonstrates reliable photoresponse under multiple excitation wavelengths (405, 473, 515, and 638 nm), showcasing its wideband detection capabilities. Furthermore, XPS measurements after prolonged air exposure confirm the enhanced chemical stability of FeIn2Se4 compared to binary chalcogenides. These findings demonstrate that 2D ternary FeIn2Se4 is an excellent candidate for advanced anisotropic optoelectronic devices, offering broadband photodetection, robust polarization sensitivity, and excellent environmental resilience.

Intelligent Detection of Drainage Pipeline Defects Based on Cross-Frame Annotation and Recall Optimization

Drainage pipeline defect detection predominantly relies on closed-circuit television (CCTV) inspection, which is labor-intensive, inefficient, and prone to missed detections. Although deep learning-based object detection has been applied, it suffers from low precision, recall, and speed in practical scenarios. This study proposes an engineering-oriented detection scheme achieving high recall and low miss rates. The annotation phase employs a cross-frame strategy combining manual labeling of first and last frames with interpolation and tracking-based refinement. Data preprocessing introduces perceptual hashing to identify similar images, enhancing training efficiency. For detection, a Faster R-CNN model is enhanced with Focal Loss to focus on hard examples, defect classification and grading, and a dynamic threshold strategy to improve recall. Validated on 5,068.72 m of real pipeline data, the method achieves a recall rate exceeding 98% across 16 defect categories, a miss rate of only 2% for grade 4 defects, and a 425% improvement in per-segment detection efficiency compared to manual screening. These results demonstrate the method's effectiveness in balancing recall, miss rate, and speed for engineering deployment.

Bismuth Upconversion Luminescent Glass for Fluoride Removal and Photocatalytic Performance of the Fluoride Removal Products

Fluoride-containing wastewater treatment typically relies on calcium-based precipitation and flocculation, which suffer from low compliance rates and difficult valorization of fluoride-laden sludge. This study introduces a novel bismuth upconversion luminescent glass (BULG) synthesized from Bi2O3, SiO2, Yb2O3, and Er2O3, designed for efficient fluoride removal and subsequent photocatalytic application. By varying the Bi2O3:SiO2 molar ratio, a series of BULGs with superior upconversion luminescence were obtained. Under optimal conditions (Bi3+:F− molar ratio = 1:1, pH = 2), fluoride removal efficiencies exceeded 97% for all compositions, with the 0.7:0.3 Bi2O3:SiO2 formulation achieving 99.9% removal and rapid settling of the precipitate. The fluoride removal products retained upconversion luminescence and exhibited semiconductor heterojunctions, enabling complete photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin (100% within 60 min). This approach not only efficiently removes fluoride ions but also valorizes the waste into a functional photocatalyst, offering a promising strategy for fluoride-containing wastewater treatment.

Tellurium vacancy-rich Bi2Te3 as a high-performance cathode material for aqueous zinc ion storage

Layered transition metal tellurides (TMTs) are promising cathode materials for aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) due to their graphite-like layered structure and weak van der Waals interactions, which facilitate rapid ion transport. However, their holistic performance—specific capacity, rate capability, and cycling stability—remains insufficient for practical applications. Here, we report a straightforward NaBH4-assisted chemical etching method to introduce abundant Te vacancies on the surface of Bi2Te3 (denoted H-Bi2Te3). Experimental and theoretical analyses reveal that these Te vacancies refine the band structure, enhance electrical conductivity, and significantly reduce the diffusion barrier for Zn2+ ions. Additionally, the vacancies provide increased storage sites for Zn ions. Consequently, H-Bi2Te3 exhibits superior zinc storage performance: a high Zn2+ diffusion coefficient of 3.98×10−11 cm2 s−1, a specific capacity of 325 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1, a rate capability of 217 mAh g−1 at 1 A g−1, and exceptional cycling stability with 70 mAh g−1 retained after 10,000 cycles at 1 A g−1. This work introduces a novel vacancy defect engineering strategy for TMT-based cathodes in AZIBs and expands the potential applications of vacancy-rich TMT materials.

A precipitation-hardened medium-entropy alloy with low thermal expansion and high ductility

Alloys with low thermal expansion are vital for precision components in aerospace, cryogenics, optics, and electronics, where dimensional stability under thermal cycling is essential. As these applications face harsher mechanical and thermal conditions, materials must offer not only low thermal expansion but also high strength and ductility. Achieving all three remains difficult, as their underlying microstructural requirements often conflict. Here, we present a medium-entropy alloy, Fe54Ni34Co6Ti3Al3 (at.%), designed to overcome this challenge through tailored precipitation engineering. The alloy forms coherent L12 nanoprecipitates that not only provide substantial precipitation strengthening but also modulate the composition of the face-centered cubic matrix. This tuning induces a low coefficient of thermal expansion and metastability in the matrix, enabling transformation-induced plasticity that enhances ductility and strain hardening. As a result, the alloy achieves a tensile yield strength of (1036±21) MPa, uniform elongation of 18.4%±1.1%, and a coefficient of thermal expansion of 5.8×10−6 °C−1. This work demonstrates a precipitation-driven pathway to reconcile strength, ductility, and thermal stability, offering a new strategy for designing multifunctional structural materials for advanced engineering environments.

Simultaneous enhancement of mechanical and fatigue properties in 2xxx aluminum alloys via microstructural uniformity induced by cyclic plasticity

The 2xxx (Al-Cu-Mg) alloy is widely used in transportation fields due to its excellent strength-to-weight ratio. However, conventional heat treatments such as peak aging (PA) often result in a pronounced strength-ductility trade-off and limited fatigue resistance. To address these limitations, this work presents a comprehensive study on the mechanical properties and fatigue behavior of Al-Cu-Mg alloy subjected to a cyclic plasticity treatment. The cyclic strengthened (CS) samples exhibit a well-balanced combination of strength and ductility due to the formation of nanoscale solute clusters. A systematic and quantitative analysis of the strengthening mechanisms is performed to evaluate the contributions of key microstructural features to the mechanical response. Moreover, the CS samples also demonstrate a significantly higher fatigue ratio and fatigue strength compared to the PA sample, despite exhibiting comparable tensile strength. These improvements are attributed to the absence of weak precipitate-free zones (PFZs) induced as a result of cyclic plasticity, which completely eliminates the pronounced strength differential between the grain interiors and the PFZs observed in the PA state. This microstructural uniformity effect effectively suppresses strain localization under cyclic loading, promotes a more homogeneous strain partitioning, and consequently delays fatigue crack initiation. These findings highlight cyclic plasticity treatment as a promising microstructure design strategy for simultaneously enhancing the mechanical and fatigue properties of high-strength Al alloys.

Phase Penetration: Key Drivers in Barrier Layer Failure of Hf-free Half-Heusler Thermoelectric Modules

High-temperature interfacial diffusion in Half-Heusler (HH) thermoelectric devices poses significant challenges for practical applications, particularly the diffusion of Ag from conventional solders, which degrades material performance and device stability. This study reveals anomalous Ag diffusion through a Cr powder barrier layer into Ti0.5Zr0.5NiSn0.98Sb0.02, driven by Sn phase penetration. In contrast, employing a Cr foil barrier layer pre-densified the material, effectively preventing Sn phase penetration and eliminating Ag diffusion pathways, thereby preserving junction integrity. After aging at 973 K for 30 days, the Cr foil junction maintained a clean interface with a low contact resistivity of 0.27 μΩ cm2. Benefiting from this interfacial design, a Hf-free HH module achieved a high conversion efficiency of 10.4% at a hot-side temperature of 976 K, alongside long-term stability. This work addresses critical bottlenecks in developing high-performance, low-cost HH modules, facilitating their commercial application in waste heat recovery.

Spatial Differentiation of Heavy Metals in a Landfill Site in a High-Altitude Cold Region Driven by Freeze-Thaw Cycles

This study investigated the spatial distribution and ecological risk of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) in soil beneath an informal waste dump in a pastoral area of Baingoin County, Nagqu City, Tibet, a high-altitude cold region with frequent freeze-thaw cycles. A total of 55 soil samples were collected from surface (0 cm), middle (10-30 cm), and deep (50 cm) layers. Single-factor index (Pi), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), Nemerow index (PN), and risk assessment code (RAC) were employed to evaluate contamination levels and potential ecological risks, while Kriging interpolation was used to map spatial distribution. Results showed that average concentrations of all seven heavy metals exceeded local background values. Horizontally, high-concentration zones were mainly located at five points within the dump. Vertically, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn were significantly enriched in the surface layer, whereas Ni exhibited higher concentrations in deeper layers, indicating downward migration driven by freeze-thaw processes. All evaluation methods identified Cd as the primary pollutant. Speciation analysis revealed that heavy metals were predominantly in the residual fraction, with Ni having the highest weak-acid-extractable fraction (5.55%), indicating strong mobility and potential biological toxicity. This study fills a gap in systematic research on informal waste dumps in high-altitude ecologically fragile areas and provides a case reference for environmental management and remediation of such sites in cold regions.

Spatially Decoupled Redox Pathways in 2D/2D g-C3N4/ZnIn2S4 Enable Highly Selective Aerobic Photooxidation of Biomass

Selective solar-driven aerobic oxidation of biomass derivatives into valuable chemicals under ambient conditions is pivotal for sustainable chemical manufacturing but faces challenges from the conflict between O2 activation kinetics and selective C–H bond cleavage. This work demonstrates a spatial decoupling strategy in a precisely-engineered 2D/2D g-C3N4/ZnIn2S4 architecture, where ZnIn2S4 domains selectively activate O2, while adjacent g-C3N4 modulates electron transfer to O2 and tailors 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) binding configuration for selective C–H bond cleavage. This enables efficient selective conversion of HMF to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) via ambient aerobic photooxidation. When used alone, ZnIn2S4 produces mixed reactive oxygen species (·O2−/·OH) due to uncontrolled electron transfer during O2 activation. In-situ spectroscopy, Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the 2D/2D heterojunction, driven by its directed electric field, selectively activates O2 into ·O2− at ZnIn2S4 domains while suppressing ·OH generation by moderate electron transfer, mitigating over-oxidation. Adjacent g-C3N4 domains precisely anchor HMF via –OH group interactions, steering selective DFF formation. This spatial decoupling achieves a remarkable HMF-to-DFF photo-conversion rate of 1517.5 μmol g−1 h−1 with 99.4% selectivity under ambient air, outperforming many reported state-of-the-art catalysts and maintaining durable cycling performance. The work establishes a spatial decoupling principle to overcome O2 activation kinetics and site competition thermodynamics, paving the way for advanced catalyst design for sustainable energy and the environment.

Advances in Research on the Effects of Exposure to Metals and Bisphenol Pollutants on Blood Pressure in Children and Adolescents

Childhood hypertension is a growing global concern, with approximately 4% of Chinese children exhibiting sustained elevated blood pressure meeting hypertension criteria, and single-time-point screening detecting rates of 14%–20% (up to 19% in obese children). Environmental exposure to metals (lead, cadmium, arsenic, mercury, copper, chromium) and bisphenol analogues (bisphenol A, S, F) has been implicated as a modifiable risk factor. This review synthesizes epidemiological evidence linking such exposures to blood pressure alterations in children and adolescents, highlighting dose-response relationships and potential mechanisms, including oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and epigenetic programming. Key findings from cited studies indicate that low-dose bisphenol A exposure alters human cardiomyocyte functionality, and synergistic effects with insulin resistance elevate childhood blood pressure. Metal exposures, particularly lead and cadmium, are associated with increased blood pressure and cardiovascular structural changes. The review underscores the critical window of developmental exposure and the 'tracking phenomenon' linking childhood blood pressure to adult hypertension. Limitations include cross-sectional designs and confounding by mixed exposures. Future research should employ longitudinal cohorts and multi-pollutant models to refine risk assessment. Preventive strategies should integrate school health programs to reduce environmental exposure and monitor cardiovascular health.

Research Progress on Bisphenol S-Induced Metabolic Disorder-Related Diseases

Bisphenol S (BPS), a substitute for bisphenol A (BPA), is widely used in food packaging, plastics, and dental fillings. BPS enters and accumulates in the human body via respiratory, digestive, and dermal routes, posing increasing health risks. Epidemiological and animal studies link BPS exposure to metabolic disorders. This review systematically summarizes BPS pollution status and its mechanisms in obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and immune system disorders. BPS detection rates reach 78.5% in food samples (up to 67.1 μg·kg−1) and 81.67% in fish (up to 65.31 μg·kg−1). In indoor dust, BPS levels reach 26.6 μg·g−1, with adult daily exposure estimated at 0.78 ng·kg−1 in China. Mechanistically, BPS disrupts lipid and glucose metabolism, induces oxidative stress and inflammation, and alters nuclear receptor signaling. The review highlights the need for molecular target identification and metabolic network interaction studies to develop intervention strategies.

Design and Implementation of an Energy-Saving Onsite Thermal Treatment System for Hazardous Medical Organic Waste Liquid

This paper presents the design and implementation of an energy-saving onsite thermal treatment system for hazardous medical organic waste liquid. The system integrates automatic control with energy-efficient and eco-friendly operation, enabling immediate treatment at the source and reducing storage and transportation volumes by over 95%. It comprises four modules: waste liquid identification, graded thermal treatment, heat recovery, and tail gas purification. The graded thermal treatment technology effectively processes waste liquids with varying compositions and calorific values. On-site experiments were conducted on four typical medical organic waste liquids over one year. Results demonstrated effective treatment meeting safety and environmental requirements, with dioxin concentrations below 0.1 ng-TEQ/m³ and CO, NOx, and SOx emissions within permissible limits. The system offers economic benefits by eliminating long-distance transport and centralized treatment costs. This approach addresses the limitations of traditional long-chain, manual-intensive disposal methods, which pose significant safety and environmental risks.

Active Site Concentration Steers the Reaction Pathway of CO2 Electroreduction

The local concentration and configuration of active sites critically influence the selectivity of CO2 electroreduction, yet constructing well-defined structures to probe this relationship remains challenging. Here, we report a molten salt-assisted strategy to synthesize Ce-Ov-Cu cascade catalysts with tunable configurations and relative concentrations of Cu and Ce-Ov sites. Two distinct geometries were engineered: one with dense Cu sites surrounding Ce-Ov (Cu10CeOx) and another with isolated Cu centers encapsulated by Ce-Ov (CuCe10Ox). These configurations direct key intermediates (*CHO or *COH) toward either C-C coupling or deep hydrogenation, thereby switching product selectivity. CuCe10Ox achieves a CH4 Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 61.7% at -1.6 V vs. RHE, whereas Cu10CeOx favors C2 production with a maximum FE of 61.5% at -1.4 V vs. RHE. Mechanistic studies reveal that locally concentrated Cu sites exhibit strong *CO2 binding affinity, enhancing *CO surface coverage and facilitating *CO-*COH coupling. In contrast, Ce-Ov-rich regions with isolated copper centers supply abundant *H, promoting deep protonation of *CHO toward CH4. This work provides insights into catalyst design, demonstrating that manipulating structural chemistry can guide CO2RR toward targeted products.

Electrostatic regulation of high-dipole dithienophthalimide-based wide-bandgap polymer for efficient ternary all-polymer solar cells

All-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) are promising for flexible and wearable electronics due to their excellent stability and mechanical stretchability. However, achieving high performance remains challenging due to difficulties in controlling the morphology of polymer blend films. In this study, a novel polymer donor, PBDTF-DTP, incorporating a weak electron-withdrawing yet large-dipole-moment dithienylphthalimide (DTP-2T) unit, was rationally designed and synthesized for ternary all-PSCs. Introducing PBDTF-DTP as a guest donor enables complementary light absorption and deepens the highest occupied molecular orbital level, simultaneously improving short-circuit current density (J_SC) and open-circuit voltage (V_OC). The large dipole moment of DTP-2T increases the dielectric constant, suppressing non-radiative energy loss and further boosting V_OC. Notably, PBDTF-DTP exhibits a relatively higher molecular electrostatic potential than the host donor, effectively tuning compatibility with both polymer donor and acceptor, regulating blend morphology, and promoting formation of a nanoscale fibrillar network. This optimized morphology facilitates efficient charge generation and transport while suppressing charge recombination. Consequently, ternary all-PSCs based on PM6:PBDTF-DTP:PYIT achieve a synergistic enhancement in J_SC, V_OC, and fill factor, yielding a remarkable power conversion efficiency of 18.01%, significantly higher than that of binary PM6:PYIT devices (15.51%). This study demonstrates that combining electrostatic potential optimization with a ternary strategy provides an effective approach to regulate morphology and achieve high-efficiency all-PSCs.

Influence of Si/Al ratio of MFI zeolites on the microstructure and catalytic performance of Co-based catalyst for N2O decomposition

A series of Co-based molecular sieve catalysts with varying Si/Al ratios was synthesized via impregnation. Microstructural properties of Co active sites were characterized by XRD, TEM, Raman, H2-TPR, Py-FTIR, and XPS. Results indicate that surface Co species predominantly exist as CoOx nanoclusters and isolated Co2+, with the latter exhibiting superior N2O decomposition activity. Decreasing the Si/Al ratio of the MFI zeolite promotes the formation of isolated Co2+ active sites, thereby enhancing catalytic performance. Compared to Co/S-1 (pure silica support), the Co/HZ60 catalyst (low Si/Al ratio ZSM-5) lowers the temperature for complete N2O decomposition by 80 °C and demonstrates excellent resistance to O2 and NO. The strong interaction between the zeolite framework and Co2+ inhibits oxidation to Co3+, improving N2O adsorption and activation. This work provides a rational design strategy for efficient and stable Co-based catalysts for N2O abatement in industrial tail gases.

A Critical Artifact in Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries: Charging under Aerial Oxidation Distorts Discharged-Cathode Characterization

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are promising for safe, low-cost energy storage, but accurate cathode characterization is essential for understanding their electrochemical behavior. This study identifies a critical artifact: routine air-drying of deeply discharged cathodes triggers spontaneous aerial oxidation, which distorts post-mortem analysis. Using NH4V4O10 (NVO) as a model cathode, we show that ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of discharged electrodes reveals only V4+/V5+ signals, with no detectable V3+, implying a theoretical capacity of only 245.5 mAh g−1, yet experimentally measured capacity reaches ~334.5 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1. This discrepancy arises because air exposure during sample preparation oxidizes the reduced vanadium states, leading to a self-charging effect that recovers ~83% of capacity. Electrochemical re-oxidation (EO-NVO) is superior to aerial oxidation (AO-NVO), producing a stable, long-range ordered bulk structure with efficient Zn2+ transport channels, whereas aerial oxidation induces only superficial changes and structural disorder. These findings resolve a key analytical inconsistency and reveal a novel capacity-contribution pathway, with direct implications for accurate material assessment and advanced battery design.
