Integrated Visual Sensing and Computing via Symmetry-Reconfigurable Photodiodes

This highlight summarizes a recent breakthrough in integrated visual sensing and computing using symmetry-reconfigurable photodiodes (SRPDs). The device architecture comprises a metal-semiconductor-metal configuration with AgBiS2 as the active layer, enabling dynamic symmetry breaking through voltage-controlled silver filament formation. The SRPD exhibits broadband photosensitivity from 360 nm to 1,550 nm at an illumination intensity of 115 mW cm-2, as demonstrated by multiwavelength time-resolved photocurrent responses. The device can be programmed into fifteen distinct photoresponsivity states, facilitating analog memory and neuromorphic computing. In imaging experiments, an SRPD-based sensory chip successfully captured images through visibly non-transparent inked glass at 808 nm, highlighting its capability for information-lossless acquisition in scattering media. Furthermore, the device achieved high-accuracy pattern recognition with nearly zero false neuron outputs when projecting specific patterns (├, ┬, ┤), each correlating to a unique current output. As a proof of concept, real-time eye-tracking control of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was demonstrated, enabling the UAV to follow and monitor a moving cyberdog. These results underscore the potential of SRPDs for processing-in-sensor applications, neuromorphic vision, and human-machine interfacing, offering a compact solution that merges sensing and computing functionalities.

Laminated self-healing thermochromic gel for visualizing thermal management

Thermochromic soft materials are flexible functional materials that adaptively tune optical properties (transmittance, reflectance, or scattering) with temperature for thermal modulation. Herein, a laminated thermochromic gel (DEE-DA) is synthesized by encapsulating a thermochromic hydrogel (DA) between two hydrophobic ionogels (DEE) in a stacked configuration. The synergy of multiple dynamic bonds endows the DEE-DA gel with exceptional mechanical properties and remarkable self-healing capability (98.8% at 30 °C). More importantly, attributed to the temperature-responsive reversible cleavage and recombination of hydrogen bonds and borate ester bonds, DEE-DA gel demonstrates tunable transmittance with a light modulation efficiency of 85.45%. In response to the various external conditions, the gel can auto-adjust the optical properties to avoid sun irradiation or heat loss. Accordingly, the gel enables efficient dual-mode thermal modulation across a broad temperature range to realize thermal management. The research proposes gel thermochromism and laminated durability enhancement for adaptive materials in smart buildings and wearables.

Differentiated Characteristics of Suspended Particulate Matter and Their Effects on Water Quality in the Middle and East Routes of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project

This study investigates the spatiotemporal differentiation of suspended particulate matter (SPM) characteristics, sources, and their impacts on water quality between the Middle Route (closed artificial channel) and East Route (open natural water system) of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. Thirty sampling sites (13 on the Middle Route, 17 on the East Route) were established, and samples were collected during dry and wet seasons. Water quality parameters and SPM characteristics were analyzed, including particle size distribution, total suspended solids (TSS), chlorophyll a, and stable carbon and nitrogen isotopes. Results show that the Middle Route maintains good and stable water quality, with SPM dominated by coarse particles (>63 μm, 61.43%–94.68%), total phosphorus (TP) <0.01 mg·L−1, and a significant positive correlation between chlorophyll a and coarse particles (r=0.60), indicating algal aggregation dominates particle formation. In contrast, the East Route exhibits high and fluctuating nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, with SPM dominated by fine particles (<20 μm, 51.26%–88.61%), TP ranging from 0.03 to 1.11 mg·L−1, and a positive correlation with fine particles, suggesting significant external inputs. Carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis reveals that Middle Route SPM primarily originates from autochthonous algae (contribution >46.75%), while East Route SPM is influenced by both terrestrial C3 plants and algae. The distinct engineering and management approaches of the two routes lead to significant differences in SPM characteristics and sources, thereby affecting water quality dynamics. The Middle Route requires an 'algal reduction and hydrodynamic optimization' strategy to control algal-derived coarse particle deposition, whereas the East Route benefits from 'retention-sedimentation and wetland purification' to reduce external fine particles and pollutant inputs. This research provides theoretical support and practical guidance for differentiated SPM management in long-distance water diversion systems.

Spatio-temporal Evolution Patterns of Carbon Budget in the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps

Accurate accounting of county-level carbon budgets and their spatio-temporal evolution is essential for formulating low-carbon development strategies tailored to each division and achieving carbon peak and neutrality goals. This study constructed a comprehensive, accurate, and unified model to measure terrestrial ecosystem carbon absorption, anthropogenic carbon emissions, and net carbon budget from 2010 to 2020 across the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps and its divisions. Results indicate: (1) Terrestrial ecosystems consistently acted as net carbon sinks, but total carbon absorption declined slowly, with carbon sequestration capacity persistently decreasing. Cultivated land, the sole carbon source, expanded rapidly into forests and grasslands. Anthropogenic carbon emissions rose steadily, with growth rates sharply decelerating after 2015, exhibiting a spatial pattern of "high in the north and east, low in the south and west." (2) Total carbon emissions/absorptions increased rapidly from 2010 to 2015, then slowed from 2015 to 2020. Energy consumption dominated, contributing over 95% of emissions in each division and 99% regionally. High-emission zones expanded eastward from the 8th Division in the Junggar Basin; by 2020, the 8th, 13th, and 6th Divisions, occupying 26.52% of the land area, carried 78.16% of net carbon emissions, marking them as high-density emission zones. (3) Carbon balance zoning in 2020 identified one carbon sink functional zone, nine low-carbon maintenance zones, and three high-carbon optimization zones, the latter concentrated in a strip in the central-eastern region covering 26.52% of the area.

Pollutant Generation Characteristics and Environmental Impact Analysis during Co-combustion of Municipal Solid Waste and Sewage Sludge

Co-combustion of municipal solid waste (MSW) and sewage sludge (SS) offers a promising route for synergistic waste management, yet pollutant release dynamics and environmental trade-offs remain inadequately characterized. This study systematically investigated the combustion behavior, pollutant emissions, and environmental impacts of MSW-SS blends at 850, 950, and 1050 °C with varying SS mass fractions (0–100%). Machine learning models, particularly artificial neural networks (ANN), were optimized to predict pollutant generation, and SHAP analysis identified key influencing factors. Results demonstrated that combustion temperature and blending ratio significantly affected burnout efficiency, with temperature exerting a more pronounced effect. An SS proportion of 20% yielded favorable combustion performance. Among pollutants, N2O and C2H4 emissions were significantly influenced by temperature, blending ratio, and their interaction, indicating high sensitivity to operating conditions. CO and C6H6 were primarily affected by blending ratio, while C7H8 responded to both temperature and blending ratio. N2O and CH4 were predominantly released during the initial combustion stage; elevated temperatures markedly suppressed N2O formation, and co-combustion generally reduced CH4 emissions. A 20% SS blend effectively reduced SO2 emissions, and NO synergistic reduction was optimal at 950 °C. Emissions of CO, C2H4, C6H6, and C7H8 exhibited antagonistic behavior under co-combustion. The ANN model accurately predicted pollutant concentrations, with combustion temperature, volatile matter, and fixed carbon content identified as critical factors. Environmental impact assessment revealed that higher temperatures reduced global warming potential (GWP) and photochemical ozone creation potential (POCP), while lower MSW proportions decreased POCP but increased GWP and acidification potential (AP). Integrating combustion performance, pollutant release, and environmental impacts, an SS proportion of 20% is recommended for optimized co-combustion.

High-performance perovskite thermoelectrics in BaZrS3 via decoupling of charge and heat transport

High-performance thermoelectric materials are typically narrow-band gap semiconductors. Here, by decoupling charge and heat transport in BaZrS3 with a band gap of about 1.9 eV, we made the emerging chalcogenide perovskite a high-performance thermoelectric material with only earth-abundant elements. Our first-principles calculations indicate that the high ionicity of BaZrS3 renders the electrons to propagate mainly through the Zr-4d orbitals, so that isovalent alloying Se on S sites minimally affects its charge transport while effectively suppressing lattice thermal conductivity. Using a flux-assisted solid-state method, we synthesized single-phase BaZrS3(1−x)Se3x samples with 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.25. As an indicator of decoupled charge and heat transport, the electron mobility is found barely degraded with increasing Se content, while the thermal conductivity is significantly reduced from 2.07 to 0.99 W m−1 K−1 at room temperature. This results in a record-high ZT of 0.81 at 750 K, a value never achieved for materials with band gaps greater than 1.5 eV, and the highest among all perovskite materials. Our work not only underscores the potential of wide band gap semiconductors as high-performance thermoelectric materials, but also demonstrates the strategy of decoupling the charge and heat transport for enhancing their thermoelectric performance.

Time-dependent phosphorescence color from P-doped carbon dots for advanced anti-counterfeiting and information encryption

Biomass-derived room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) carbon dots (CDs) hold great promise for anti-counterfeiting and information encryption. However, achieving solid-state matrix-free long-lived CDs with time-dependent phosphorescence colors (TDPC) remains challenging due to aggregation-induced quenching. Here, solid-state matrix-free RTP phosphorus-doped CDs (P-CDs) are developed via one-step hydrothermal treatment of feather powder and phytic acid. The resulting P-CDs powder exhibits bright blue fluorescence under UV illumination and unprecedented TDPC shifting from yellow to green after UV removal, with afterglow lasting 12 s (average lifetime 1.15 s). Enhanced RTP is attributed to increased triplet-state excitons via spin-orbit coupling induced by P-doping. A dual-mode luminescent ink formulated by combining P-CDs with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is successfully applied to commercial A4 paper, showing pronounced TDPC (light-yellow to green) with improved RTP lifetime (1.31 s) after ceasing UV irradiation. The P-CDs/PVA ink demonstrates excellent anti-counterfeiting and information encryption capabilities, outstanding luminescent durability, and broad practicability on cellulosic substrates including fabric and paper. These findings provide a strategy for exploiting matrix-free solid-state RTP P-CDs with distinctive TDPC properties and offer a sustainable route to converting feather wastes into high-value materials.

Donor-acceptor engineered aza-BODIPY fluorophore with intramolecular charge transfer-enhanced NIR-II emission for tumor phototheranostics

Organic fluorophores operating in the second near-infrared (NIR-II, 1000–1700 nm) window are highly attractive for cancer phototheranostics. Yet, the advancement of aza-BODIPY-based NIR-II dyes remains challenging due to their limited spectral tunability and diminished fluorescence quantum yields (FLQY) under physiological conditions. Herein, we propose a rational donor-acceptor (D-A) molecular engineering strategy to construct an aza-BODIPY fluorophore, TPACN, featuring intramolecular charge transfer (ICT)-enhanced NIR-II emission and balanced photothermal performance. By introducing electron-rich triphenylamine (TPA) donors and peripheral cyano (–CN) acceptors, the optimized D-A coupling significantly strengthened the ICT effect, leading to broadened NIR absorption, a markedly red-shifted fluorescence peak at 1086 nm, and an exceptional fluorescence quantum yield of 1.55% in dichloromethane (DCM). When encapsulated in F127, TPACN nanoparticles (TPACN NPs) maintained a high aqueous FLQY of 0.20%, accompanied by a notable photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) of 39% under 808 nm irradiation. The sterically twisted TPA units effectively alleviated aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) and fine-tuned the excited-state energy dissipation pathways, realizing a synergistic balance between radiative (fluorescence) and non-radiative (heat) relaxation. Benefiting from these optimized photophysical properties, TPACN NPs achieved high-resolution NIR-I photoacoustic and NIR-II fluorescence dual-modal imaging, enabling accurate tumor visualization and efficient photothermal ablation in vivo. This work introduces a general design paradigm that exploits ICT modulation and steric engineering to overcome the intrinsic fluorescence bottleneck of aza-BODIPY systems, offering new molecular insights for the advancement of high-performance NIR-II dyes for precision phototheranostics.

Balancing photosensitivity and visible-light absorption in intrinsically black photosensitive polyimide: synthesis and metal patterning

The escalating power density of electronic devices necessitates effective visible-light shielding in advanced packaging to ensure circuit security and long-term reliability. Photosensitive polyimides (PSPI) serve dual roles as photodefinable dielectrics and structural layers, but intrinsically black PSPI (B-PSPI) suffer from competitive ultraviolet (UV) absorption between chromophores and photosensitive moieties, limiting co-optimization of deep visible-light blocking and lithographic resolution. Here, we report a main-/side-chain spatial decoupling strategy to synthesize a novel B-PSPI. By polymerizing pyromellitic dianhydride with a main-chain coloring monomer (4,4'-diaminodiphenylamine) and a side-chain photosensitive monomer (1,4-dihydropyridine-functionalized diamine), the monomer stoichiometric ratio is precisely engineered. This design spatially isolates functional groups and enhances charge transfer, yielding exceptional visible-light shielding (CIE L* index of 21.39, cut-off wavelength ≈ 555 nm) with good lithographic sensitivity. UV exposure triggers in situ generation of coordination sites from photosensitive groups, anchoring active metal species for electroless copper plating. This enables direct additive fabrication of fine copper lines (40/80 μm line width/spacing) with robust Cu/B-PSPI interfacial adhesion of 16.6 MPa. This work provides a robust molecular design paradigm for B-PSPI, integrating superior optical shielding and surface metallization for high-density interconnect applications.

Unraveling the bilayer-cooperative transformation mechanism at the α/β-Si3N4 interface via machine-learning simulations

Silicon nitride (Si3N4) is a strong, thermally stable covalent ceramic typically regarded as brittle with limited deformability. Recent experimental and density functional theory (DFT) studies indicate that the α/β interface undergoes a β→α transformation via sliding followed by bond-switching, suggesting a pathway to achieve plasticity, but DFT's spatiotemporal reach prevents a full mechanistic picture. Here, we develop a physics-informed high-accuracy neural network interatomic potential (NNAP) model with DFT-level accuracy for phase transformations and use it to perform large-scale atomistic simulations. NNAP-guided simulations show that structural relaxation during relative sliding between α- and β-phases at the interface triggers pronounced atomic-layer rearrangements and lowers the energy barrier by nearly 60%. We further find that the ensuing phase transformation does not proceed by isolated layer-by-layer switching but instead follows in-plane nucleation and growth mediated by a bilayer cooperative mechanism, which further reduces kinetic barriers and facilitates the transformation. CI-NEB calculations reveal that the bilayer cooperative pathway has an energy barrier of 0.018 eV/Ų, lower than the independent layer-by-layer manner (0.020 eV/Ų), indicating enhanced kinetic accessibility. These results provide new atomistic insights into interface-driven phase transformations in dual-phase Si3N4 and offer guidance for designing more deformable covalent ceramics.

Water-Unquenchable Ultralong Room-Temperature Phosphorescent CDs@SiO2 Composites for Information Encryption and Anticounterfeiting Applications

Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials are critical for anticounterfeiting, yet their practical deployment in aqueous media is severely constrained by average lifetimes below 1 s due to moisture- and oxygen-induced quenching. This study introduces an ex-situ covalent coupling strategy to fabricate liquid-phase ultralong RTP composites by covalently anchoring feather-derived carbon dots (CDs) onto SiO2 microspheres. The resulting CDs@SiO2 microspheres exhibit an aqueous dispersion lifetime of 2.38 s and an absolute quantum yield of 22%, while the solid-state composite achieves an average lifetime of 3.04 s—surpassing existing carbon-based RTP materials. The enhanced phosphorescence originates from Si–O–C covalent bond immobilization and Si–O–Si rigid networks that suppress nonradiative decay. The composites display reversible water-responsive structural colors, blue fluorescence, and cyan RTP, enabling multilevel information encryption and high-level anticounterfeiting. These findings establish a scalable route for water-resistant, long-lived RTP materials with dual-mode optical security features.

Synthesis of Millimeter-Sized Hexagonal Diamond Bulk from Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite at 30 GPa and 1400 °C: A Critical Commentary on Phase Transformation Mechanisms and Sintering Challenges

The recent synthesis of millimeter-sized hexagonal diamond (HD)-dominated bulk from highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) at ~30 GPa and 1400 °C by Liu, Yao and co-workers represents a significant advance in superhard materials. The bulk exhibits a highly oriented microstructure, yielding an anisotropic Vickers hardness of up to 155 GPa, exceeding natural cubic diamond by over 40%. However, the proposed direct transformation mechanism from post-graphite to HD remains contentious. First-principles calculations indicate that C–C bond formation between graphite layers requires interlayer spacing below 2.5 Å, yet synchrotron X-ray diffraction shows that at 30 GPa (and even 50 GPa) the interlayer spacing is substantially larger. This discrepancy challenges the direct phase transformation pathway. An alternative mechanism involving coherent gradia interface formation and subsequent interface advance, previously established for graphite-to-diamond conversion, offers a more plausible explanation. Furthermore, achieving high HD volume fractions necessitates low synthesis temperatures, which impede sintering of large-angle grain boundaries between diamond grains, compromising toughness—particularly impact toughness. Future efforts must prioritize advanced sintering techniques, such as high-pressure flash sintering, to meet practical toughness demands. This commentary assesses the breakthrough, its unresolved mechanistic questions, and the critical barriers to industrial deployment.

Laser-Engraved Multilevel Encryption Enabled by FRET-Based Tunable Multicolor Polymeric Afterglow Materials

Polymeric multicolor afterglow materials with tunable phosphorescence and environmental adaptability remain a bottleneck in optical anti-counterfeiting. This work integrates triplet-to-singlet Förster resonance energy transfer (TS-FRET) with ultraviolet (UV) laser direct writing to fabricate phosphorescent anti-counterfeiting labels. Using poly(acrylamide-co-4'-vinyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-3,5-dicarboxylic acid) (BCA2PAM) as the donor and rhodamine 6G (R6G) as the acceptor, precise color tuning is achieved. Time-resolved multicolor displays are realized by loading afterglow materials onto filter paper, while luminescent elastomers are synthesized via integration with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Laser inscription of 'disappear' on R6G-doped BCA2PAM films at varying laser powers yields exclusive visibility of 'appear' under UV irradiation; upon UV off, 'disappear' emerges, followed by reappearance of 'appear' after 1 s, demonstrating encryption efficacy. High-power laser-inscribed QR codes remain imperceptible under UV but become visible after simulated breath exposure and subsequent UV activation. Integrated with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) adhesive tapes, the films form tamper-evident labels with customizable branding. Laser-written patterns visible under UV can be erased under ambient humidity and re-encrypted with new motifs, exhibiting rewritable capability. These results provide a new method based on ultraviolet light and multicolor time-resolved coupling in optical encryption, demonstrating industrial production potential for high-end anti-counterfeiting labels.
