Designing Hierarchically b-Axis Shortening for Enhanced Diffusion and Coke Accommodation in Efficient Methanol to Olefins

Authors: Zhan Liu, Zhi-Yi Hu, Jia-Min Lyu, Chun-Mu Guo, Bo Ye, Shen Yu, Ming-Hui Sun, Gustaaf Van Tendeloo, Li-Hua Chen, Bao-Lian Su

Enhancing light olefin selectivity and extending catalytic durability remain critical challenges for ZSM-5 zeolites in methanol-to-olefins (MTO) conversion, primarily due to inherent diffusion restrictions along the MFI b-axis and poor coke accommodation. Here, we report a hierarchically single-crystalline ZSM-5 sheet architecture featuring interconnected multiscale porosity and a remarkably reduced b-axis thickness (<50 nm), quantitatively verified by three-dimensional electron tomography. Real-time confocal laser scanning microscopy tracking demonstrated significantly enhanced molecular diffusivity compared to conventional micron-sized ZSM-5 (Micro-ZSM-5). This engineered structure distributes abundant aluminum sites on highly accessible diffusion pathways, achieving an enlarged coke accommodation of 16.31 wt% with a coke deposition rate of 0.59 mg gβˆ’1 hβˆ’1, only one third of that in Micro-ZSM-5. In continuous MTO operation, the hierarchical ZSM-5 sheet (Hier-ZSM-5-S) maintained an average ethylene and propene selectivity of 63.5% for 22.2 hours (WHSV = 3.6 hβˆ’1, T = 480Β°C), which was 19% higher and 6.5 times longer than Micro-ZSM-5, respectively. This hierarchically shortened b-axis structure establishes a generalizable paradigm for enhanced diffusion and coke accommodation in precisely designed pore systems, applicable to various reactions.

A Sulfobetaine Polyurethane for Substitutable Meniscus Implant with Excellent Mechanical, Tribological, and Biological Properties

Authors: Lingfeng Hu, Hongbo Wang, Mingbo Ruan, Jinge Li, Yixuan Du, Wei Gong, Xiaoniu Yang

The development of substitutable meniscus implants that can effectively protect articular cartilage remains a great challenge. Herein, a polyurethane with chemical crosslinking and sulfobetaine extenders containing hydrophobic chains (PU-CL-hSB) is developed, which could improve comprehensive properties and long-term stability simultaneously. By regulating the mole ratio of functional groups, PU-CL-hSB with appropriate mechanical properties, excellent tribological properties, and good fatigue resistance is used to prepare substitutable meniscus implant by hot-pressing. Due to the synergistic effect of functional groups, PU-CL-hSB meniscus implant presents comparable or even superior properties to native meniscus. It withstands a maximum force of 26.08 N versus 25.14 N for native meniscus, an energy dissipation from 45.93 to 39.17 N mm compared to 28.83 to 19.11 N mm for native meniscus over 300 cycles, and a friction coefficient from 0.08 to 0.19 compared to 0.11 to 0.26 for native meniscus. This PU-CL-hSB meniscus implant is further implanted into live rabbit knee joints for 8 and 25 weeks by a new approach, and in vivo data indicate that PU-CL-hSB meniscus implant not only protects articular cartilage from severe damage without eliciting inflammatory responses, but also can maintain normal physiological activities in the native state. Our findings present a substitutable meniscus implant that could be applied in vivo and propose evaluation methodologies for meniscus implants.

Electrospun MOFs-Based Nanofibrous Membranes for Water and Air Purification: A Review

Authors: Cihan Liu, Wenbo Wu, Xinyu Li, Tifeng Jiao

Global water scarcity and atmospheric pollution necessitate advanced remediation materials. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer high specific surface areas (up to 7000 m2 gβˆ’1), tunable pore sizes (0.3–4.0 nm), and abundant active sites, yet their application is hindered by agglomeration, poor recoverability, and structural fragility. Electrospinning embeds MOFs into polymeric nanofibers, yielding freestanding membranes with three-dimensionally interconnected porous networks that enhance dispersion, operational stability, and handling. This review systematically examines design strategies, mechanistic insights, and performance of electrospun MOF-based nanofibrous membranes for water purification (pharmaceutical residues, heavy metal ions, synthetic dyes, emulsified oils) and air purification (ultrafine particulate matter, volatile organic compounds), benchmarking against conventional counterparts. Recent progress in multifunctional synergistic systems, stimuli-responsive membranes, and enhanced environmental resistance is highlighted. Persistent challenges and future research directions are discussed to guide rational design of advanced MOF-integrated membrane technologies.

Towards Chlorine-Tolerant Seawater Electrolysis: Anode Electrocatalysts, Electrolyte, and System Design Strategies

Authors: Junnan Song, Xu Zhang, Guiqiang Pu, Zhenjie Cheng, Chenglong Qiu, Jiacheng Wang

Seawater electrolysis (SWE) is a reusable and convenient avenue for producing hydrogen, offering a promising solution to the energy crisis and global warming. However, poor electrolytic efficiency and irreversible corrosion caused by high concentrations of chlorine severely hinder the commercialization of SWE. To address these challenges, numerous strategies have been proposed in recent years, involving theoretical innovations, directional catalyst design, and electrolyser modification. This review provides a systematic summary of the chlorine-related challenges and solutions encountered in SWE. The chlorine-related theoretical knowledge and challenges in SWE systems are first emphasized. Subsequently, multiple anodic chloride suppression strategies are introduced from three aspects: directional regulation of oxygen evolution catalysts, optimization of electrolyte compositions, and ingenious upgrades of electrolytic cells. Finally, future challenges and development directions for large-scale application of SWE technology are explored. This review offers an in-depth analysis of the chlorine-related challenges encountered in the industrialization of SWE, aiming to accelerate the advancement of this technology toward practical applications.
