Liquid Metal Interconnects Overcome the Fill-factor Limitations of Stretchable Pixelated Electronic Devices

Stretchable pixelated electronic devices face a fundamental design conflict: accommodating mechanical deformation while preserving a high fill factor of active photosensitive elements. Conventional strain-relief strategies, such as pop-up, serpentine, and kirigami structures, rely on geometric unfolding that inevitably consumes inactive area, reducing pixel density and compromising photoresponse intensity, spatial resolution, and signal-to-noise ratio. In a recent breakthrough published in Nature Materials, Park et al. demonstrated a high-fill-factor silicon–liquid metal pixelated platform for multiscale visual acquisition and depth perception. The device integrates ~700-nm-thick ultrathin single-crystalline silicon photodiodes, finely patterned liquid metal interconnects, and a styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) elastomer substrate. The silicon pixels provide high-performance photoelectric conversion, while the liquid metal interconnects accommodate deformation, achieving a functional separation that mitigates the trade-off between pixel density and mechanical compliance. The device maintains stable photodiode characteristics and repeatable photoresponses under high-curvature hemispherical stretching and large biaxial tensile strain. Two applications were demonstrated: a human-eye-inspired robotic vision system with a curved photosensitive surface for wide-field imaging, and an epidermal, lensless, near-contact imaging device for close-range image acquisition. These systems enable multiscale visual acquisition and depth perception, offering a scalable route for future stretchable visual electronics.

Hafnium Oxide-Based Ferroelectric Reconfigurable Optoelectronic Logic Gate Arrays for Optical Communication Encryption

Traditional optical fiber communication encryption methods lack sufficient dynamic adaptability and hardware flexibility, while reconfigurable logic gates can overcome this limitation, thereby significantly improving the flexibility of encryption systems. This study reports a reconfigurable optoelectronic logic gate (OELG) system based on hafnium-zirconium oxide (HZO) ferroelectric thin films. Through ultra-low temperature atomic layer deposition technique, the fabricated HZO thin films demonstrate an exceptional pyroelectric coefficient of 1835.91 μC m−2 K−1 and robust multi-level polarization stability, enabling efficient broadband photon-to-current conversion. By leveraging the pyroelectric effect and tunable polarization states, the OELG device achieves dynamic optical signal modulation and logic processing. The OELG device supports five fundamental logic operations (AND, OR, NAND, NOR, NOT) via electrical bias and polarization control, without requiring hardware modifications. The OELG device demonstrates stable performance over 10^9 cycles with no degradation, meeting practical application requirements. Furthermore, a convolutional neural network (CNN)-integrated image encryption-decryption framework was validated, achieving 95.01% recognition accuracy on decrypted data, while unauthorized decryption attempts resulted in significant feature loss. This study addresses security challenges in optical communication networks by proposing an innovative solution that integrates pyroelectric materials with reconfigurable logic gate technology, offering a new pathway to enhance physical-layer security.

Thermoelectric Generator-Driven Electrodeposition for Efficient Treatment of Low-Concentration Copper-Containing Wastewater

Industrial processes generate substantial low-grade waste heat and cold, which can be harnessed via thermoelectric generators (TEGs) based on the Seebeck effect. However, the low-voltage output of TEGs poses application challenges. This study investigates a TEG-driven electrodeposition system for efficient treatment of low-concentration copper-containing wastewater from electroplating, integrated circuit, and energy industries. The TEG system, comprising two series-connected semiconductor modules, achieved a maximum power of 0.36 W at a temperature difference (ΔT) of 130 °C. Optimal operating parameters for the coupled system were determined: ΔT = 90 °C, counter-current flow (two-side inlet), flow rate of 20 mL·min⁻¹, initial Cu²⁺ concentration of 500 mg·L⁻¹, and electrode gap of 0.7 cm. Under these conditions, after 60 min of electrodeposition, copper removal efficiency reached 99.42%, current efficiency was 67.93%, and the energy conversion efficiency of the TEG-electrodeposition system was 36.96%. The system also treated real copper-containing wastewater, achieving 95.83% removal within 100 min. Characterization via SEM, XRD, and XPS revealed that the electrodeposited product consisted of metallic copper and cuprous oxide, with metallic copper accounting for approximately 60%. This work provides a promising approach for utilizing industrial waste heat and cold to achieve low-energy, high-efficiency treatment of heavy metal wastewater.

Citric Acid-Modified HUSY Zeolite Catalyzes Alkylation of Phenol with Cyclohexanol for High-Density Aviation Fuel Precursors

Lignin-derived oxygenated aromatics, particularly phenols and aromatic ethers, are promising feedstocks for synthesizing high-density, high-heat-sink aviation fuels via alkylation-hydrogenation processes. This study systematically evaluates the catalytic performance of various zeolites (Hβ, HZSM-5, MCM-41, and HUSY) in the alkylation of phenol with cyclohexanol. Characterization demonstrates that HUSY zeolite exhibits superior catalytic activity due to its favorable pore architecture and well-balanced acid site distribution, which synergistically facilitate molecular diffusion and catalytic transformations. To further enhance catalytic properties, HUSY was modified with citric acid at various concentrations and compared with NaOH and oxalic acid treatments. Results reveal that citric acid treatment preserves crystallinity while modulating acidity and pore structure. All modified zeolites enhance phenol alkylation activity. Notably, HUSY-0.5M, exhibiting the highest medium-strong acid to total acid ratio, achieves superior performance: 80.4% phenol conversion and 99.6% selectivity for alkylation products. The catalyst also shows high activity for various lignin-derived compounds (p-cresol, anisole, guaiacol), demonstrating broad applicability. This work provides a new strategy for valorizing lignin-derived phenols into high-value fuel precursors through alkylation.

Multisite-steered C–C coupling for photocatalytic air-concentration CO2 reduction into C2H6

Photocatalytic conversion of atmospheric CO2 (0.03%) into multi-carbon fuels remains a grand challenge due to the high energy barrier of C–C coupling and the low concentration of CO2. Here, we report the construction of multiple metal pair sites on metal oxide nanosheets to steer C–C coupling, enabling efficient photoreduction of air-concentration CO2 to ethane (C2H6). As a prototype, Au nanoparticles were anchored on Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets (Au-Bi4Ti3O12). High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the formation of Au-Ti metal pair sites at the interface. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed the presence of *OCCOH intermediate on Au-Bi4Ti3O12 during CO2 photoreduction, which was absent on pristine Bi4Ti3O12. Density functional theory calculations showed that the Gibbs free energy for *CO–COH formation on Au-Bi4Ti3O12 is 2.23 eV, significantly lower than that on Bi4Ti3O12 (3.59 eV), indicating facilitated C–C coupling. Consequently, Au-Bi4Ti3O12 exhibited a C2H6 evolution rate of 2.58 μmol g−1 h−1 under 0.03% CO2, whereas Bi4Ti3O12 produced only C1 products (CO and CH4). This work demonstrates the first single-catalyst photoreduction of atmospheric CO2 to C2H6, highlighting the effectiveness of engineered multiple active sites in overcoming the C–C coupling bottleneck.

Numerical Simulation of a Circulating Fluidized Bed Desulfurization Reactor with Bypass

The semi-dry desulfurization process in circulating fluidized beds (CFB) is sensitive to reactor flow field, which directly impacts desulfurization efficiency. To accommodate variable flue gas loads while maintaining constant Venturi tube velocity, a bypass structure crossing the Venturi section was introduced between the reactor inlet and diffusion section. Numerical simulations using ANSYS Fluent were conducted to evaluate the effects of bypass valve opening and number of bypass pipes on flow field uniformity and pressure loss. Results indicate that for flue gas load variations, bypass valve openings must exceed 50% and at least two bypass pipes are required to ensure uniform flow distribution. At 100% flue gas load, the empty reactor pressure loss was 911 Pa, decreasing to approximately 500 Pa at lower loads. The optimized bypass configuration enables stable and uniform flow fields with reduced pressure loss across a wide load range of 50%–100%, offering an effective solution for enhancing desulfurization efficiency and operational adaptability in industrial applications.
