Intrinsically Crosslinked Self-Assembled Long-Lived Polymeric Room-Temperature Phosphorescent Microspheres

Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) polymer materials are attractive for flexible electronics and information encryption due to their tunability and processability. However, achieving polymeric RTP systems that simultaneously exhibit high thermal sensitivity, reversible multicolor emission, and long phosphorescence lifetime (τPhos) with high quantum yield (ΦPhos) remains challenging. Here, we report an in-situ cross-linked self-assembly strategy that converts flexible polymers into rigid polymer microspheres, yielding long τPhos, high ΦPhos, and thermally and time-dependent tunable RTP. The resulting microspheres (PM0.1-0.01-1) exhibit a maximum τPhos of 1754 ms and ΦPhos of 42.83%, markedly superior to previously reported intrinsic polymer RTP materials. At 77 K, they display ultralong green emission with a lifetime of 6019 ms and visible afterglow lasting up to 99 s. The cross-linked microspheres enable time-dependent, continuously tunable RTP and thermally responsive color switching, while maintaining excellent phosphorescence stability in aqueous and high-temperature environments. This provides a versatile platform for dynamic information encryption, full-color afterglow LEDs, and temperature sensing. The strategy establishes a general design principle for developing multidimensional, controllable, and stable high-performance polymer RTP materials.

Topological Chitosan Framework Enables Reversible Columnar Array Anodes for High-Performance Aqueous Zinc Batteries

Eco-friendly aqueous zinc batteries (AZBs) are promising alternatives to lead-acid batteries in applications requiring both safety and energy density. However, their practical deployment is hindered by the synergistic deterioration of zinc anodes—structural collapse and kinetic failure—under high depth of discharge (DOD) and high current densities, which severely limits actual energy and power densities. Here, we report a strategy for the in situ integration of a double-layer topological chitosan framework (D-CTS) on current collectors via regulating phase separation kinetics during multistage coordination-neutralization electrophoresis. The vertical through-hole array is formed by coupling instantaneous and delayed phase separation. Subsequently, a columnar zinc array is mediated by D-CTS to construct an integrated component (D-CTS-Zn) comprising a vertical through-hole separator and an array anode. The embedded interconnected nanonetworks within the through-hole walls enable dynamic equilibrium of the columnar zinc array through a lateral ion compensation mechanism. As a result, Zn||Zn symmetric cells with D-CTS-Zn stably cycle over 3000 cycles at 200 mA cm−2 under 60% DOD. The assembled D-CTS-Zn||MnO2 battery delivers an energy density of 83 Wh kg−1 at an ultrahigh power density of 9.25 kW kg−1. This work provides a constructive strategy for chitosan phase separation regulation and separator-induced reversible metal array anodes.

Bio-inspired barnacle cement nano-composite coating on biodegradable magnesium alloy for cerebrovascular application

Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of mortality and long-term disability worldwide, with endovascular stent intervention emerging as a key therapeutic strategy. Biodegradable Mg-Zn-Y-Nd alloy (ZE21B) offers promising mechanical properties and biocompatibility for vascular scaffolds, yet suffers from inadequate corrosion resistance, insufficient endothelialization, and impaired blood-brain barrier remodeling. This study develops a composite coating comprising barnacle cement protein cp19k and sulfonated hyaluronic acid nanoparticles (NP@S-HA) applied via electrostatic spraying onto ZE21B. The cp19k/NP@S-HA coating enhances corrosion resistance by approximately 40.6% relative to uncoated ZE21B, as determined by electrochemical and static immersion tests. In vitro blood and cellular assays demonstrate that the coating promotes endothelial cell proliferation and migration, inhibits smooth muscle cell proliferation while regulating contractile phenotype, suppresses macrophage adherence and induces M2 polarization, reduces TNF-α expression, and mitigates fibroplasia. These findings indicate that the cp19k/NP@S-HA composite coating provides an effective surface modification strategy for biodegradable magnesium alloys in cerebrovascular applications, potentially improving stent performance and patient outcomes.

Azobenzene/UV absorber dual-protected thermochromic elastomeric fibers toward enhanced light-resistance

Leuco dye-based thermochromic fibers suffer from poor light fastness, limiting their cyclability. Here, a hydrogen bond dissociation/structural isomerization-based dual ultraviolet (UV)-shielding strategy is proposed to develop enhanced light-resistant thermochromic elastomer fibers (Azo/TCM@Abs/TPU) employing UV absorbers and 4-dodecyloxyazobenzene (C12-Azo) through a coaxial wet-spinning process. The integration of UV absorbers and C12-Azo enhances UV protection, effectively blocking nearly the entire UV spectrum. The light fastness of Azo/TCM@Abs/TPU has been improved to Grades 3–4, enabling a stable thermochromic function to withstand several months of sunlight exposure. Additionally, the absorbed UV light is stored as chemical energy within C12-Azo via trans-to-cis photoisomerization. This stored energy can be released as heat on demand. The coaxial dual-protection concept using photoisomerization offers an efficient method to enhance light resistance in thermochromic fibers.

Hydrodeoxygenation of Lignin-Derived Phenolic Compounds Catalyzed by NiCo Bimetallic Catalyst Supported on N-Doped Biochar and Al2O3

To achieve efficient conversion of lignin-derived phenolic compounds into high-value hydrocarbon fuels, a series of NiCo bimetallic catalysts with N-doped biochar and Al2O3 composite supports (NiCo/NC-Al2O3) were designed and synthesized. Comprehensive characterizations (XRD, TEM, XPS, H2-TPD) revealed the superior catalytic activity in the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived phenolic compounds. The optimized Ni8Co2/NC-Al2O3 catalyst exhibited good metal dispersion and excellent hydrogen dissociation adsorption capacity. Under mild reaction conditions (240°C, 1 MPa H2, 4 h), it achieved complete conversion of guaiacol and 99.9% selectivity to cyclohexane, significantly outperforming monometallic Ni10/NC-Al2O3 and Co10/NC-Al2O3 catalysts. Comparative studies indicated a synergistic effect between Ni and Co, where the introduction of Co effectively promoted aromatic ring hydrogenation and C−O bond cleavage. The catalyst maintained high activity after four reuse cycles, demonstrating outstanding structural stability. This study elucidates the regulatory mechanism of the Ni-Co synergistic effect on catalytic performance, providing new insights for the development of efficient non-noble metal HDO catalysts.

A Dataset of Nickel and Cobalt Based Phosphides for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Solution

Hydrogen as an energy carrier offers a promising route to mitigate environmental issues from fossil fuel use. Efficient and inexpensive electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline media are critical for advancing alkaline water electrolyzers. Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) are promising (pre-)catalysts for OER. This dataset compiles and compares the electrocatalytic OER activity of nickel- and cobalt-based phosphides. The phosphides were synthesized via solvothermal phosphidization or electrodeposition, and their OER activities were evaluated using linear sweep voltammetry in 1 mol/L KOH. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were also performed. The dataset comprises 312 files totaling 14.5 MB. It provides key electrocatalytic parameters and enables analysis of the influence of metal doping, solvothermal conditions (solvent and precursors), and crystallinity on OER activity. This dataset serves as a benchmark for evaluating Ni and Co phosphide materials for alkaline OER and provides a foundation for designing more active TMP-based electrocatalysts through comparative analysis. The materials may also be applied to other reactions such as hydrogen evolution, alcohol oxidation, and CO2 reduction, relevant to fuel cells, electrolyzers, and metal-air batteries, as well as in lithium/sodium-ion batteries and anticorrosion coatings.

Electropolymerization enables controlled deposition of these polymers onto conductive substrates, tuning loading, morphology, and structure. This dataset systematically compares the electrochemical energy storage performance of conducting polymers derived from monomers including 1,10-phenanthroline, 5-amino-2-naphthalenesulfonic acid, o-aminophenol, 1,5-diaminonapthalene, s-triazine, and aromatic molecules with multiple carbonyl and imino groups. Aqueous electrolytes investigated include sulfuric acid, zinc sulfate, ammonium sulfate, potassium hydroxide, and zinc trifluoromethanesulfonate solutions. Galvanostatic charge-discharge at various mass-normalized current densities was employed to evaluate specific capacities. The dataset comprises 266 MB across 490 files, providing key parameters such as specific capacity, rate capability, and cycling stability. Analysis of this data enables inference on the influence of polymer structure and electrolyte composition on charge storage. This resource serves as a reference for the rational design of high-performance conducting polymer electrodes for aqueous energy storage devices.

Highly Robust Anode Interlayer for Water-Proof and Stretchable Organic Solar Cells

Organic solar cells (OSCs) offer unique advantages for wearable electronics due to their light weight and mechanical flexibility. However, achieving both high optoelectronic performance and mechanical robustness in organic semiconductors remains challenging, compromising the efficiency and durability of stretchable OSCs. Here, we report a cross-linked conjugated polyelectrolyte (CPE)-polyoxometalate (POM) anode interlayer (AIL), PTN-POM, constructed via strong electrostatic interactions between ammonium groups and POM. The PTN-POM film exhibits an electrical conductivity of 3.30×10−3 S/m and high stretchability, significantly outperforming the classic PEDOT:PSS AIL in mechanical strength. Binary OSCs modified with PTN-POM achieve a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.59%, the highest reported for OSCs using a cross-linked AIL. Notably, PTN-POM enables fabrication of water-proof OSCs that show no performance degradation after underwater storage for 42 days. Furthermore, stretchable OSCs incorporating PTN-POM demonstrate enhanced mechanical robustness, retaining 81% of initial PCE under a large tensile strain of 50%. This work significantly enhances the photovoltaic, waterproof, and mechanical properties of OSCs, advancing their potential for wearable photovoltaics.

A Hetero-Cross-Linking Strategy for Versatile Artificial Muscles with Superior Electromechanical Sensitivity

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are promising artificial muscle technologies due to their large actuation strains, high energy density, and fast response. However, their practical application is hindered by a trade-off between increasing the relative dielectric constant (εr) and decreasing the Young's modulus (Y), which limits electromechanical sensitivity (εr/Y) to below 110 MPa⁻¹. Here, we report a hetero-cross-linking strategy to fabricate a semiseparated biphasic bicontinuous dielectric elastomer (SBE) using two commercial silicone elastomers: Elastosil P7676 (mechanical phase, M-phase) and Sylgard 170 (dielectric phase, D-phase). The M-phase provides an ultralow Young's modulus (~10 kPa), while the D-phase offers a high dielectric constant (3.6). With only 10% D-phase content (SBE-1), the material achieves a record-high electromechanical sensitivity of 360 MPa⁻¹. Under an electric field of 35 V μm⁻¹ without prestretching, SBE-1 exhibits a 90% area strain, significantly outperforming pure phases and previously reported DEAs. The interpenetrating phase structure also enhances breakdown strength. SBE-based artificial muscles demonstrate large displacement at high frequencies, achieving a power density of 2250 W kg⁻¹ at resonance (>200 Hz), surpassing natural muscle and prior DEA artificial muscles. A human-like robotic arm with one rotational joint and four pure-shear SBE-based artificial muscles was developed, capable of extending and bending actions. This work provides a versatile strategy for high-performance DEAs, advancing soft robotics applications.
