Lewis Acid and Hydroxyl Enabled PEO Electrolytes for Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid polymer electrolytes are leading candidates for solid-state lithium metal batteries due to their flexibility, processability, and interfacial compliance. However, the strong crystallization tendency of PEO and limited lithium salt dissociation result in low ionic conductivity and low Li+ transference number, exacerbating concentration polarization and interfacial instability. Introducing metal-organic framework (MOF) fillers into PEO matrices has emerged as an effective route to regulate polymer-chain packing and promote salt dissociation via Lewis acid-base interactions. Yet, most studies focus on cubic ZIF-8, whose saturated Zn coordination environment limits intrinsic Lewis acidity and restricts its ability to immobilize TFSI- anions. Simultaneously, simple physical blending often leaves discontinuous interfacial transport regions in composite electrolytes, so improved salt dissociation does not automatically translate into fast Li+ transport. Here we report a PEO-based composite polymer electrolyte, denoted as PZS, that couples monoclinic ZIF-8 (M-ZIF-8) nanosheets with a thin SiO2 layer. The design combines two complementary functions: the under-coordinated Zn sites in M-ZIF-8 provide strong Lewis acid centers to adsorb TFSI- and promote LiTFSI dissociation, while the hydroxyl-rich SiO2 shell improves compatibility with the PEO matrix and helps construct continuous interfacial Li+ transport pathways. Benefiting from this synergy, the optimized PZS electrolyte delivers an ionic conductivity of 8.3 × 10-4 S cm-1 and a Li+ transference number of 0.57 at 60 ℃, together with an electrochemical stability window of 5.2 V. Li||Li symmetric cells remain stable for over 1200 h at 0.1 mA cm-2, and LFP||Li full cells retain 80% of their capacity after 400 cycles at 0.5 C.

Ultra-high-crystallinity transparent glass-ceramic scintillators for high-temperature X-ray imaging

High-temperature X-ray imaging demands scintillators with high crystallinity, efficient scintillation, and robust thermal stability, yet suitable materials remain scarce. Here, we report an ultra-high-crystallinity transparent glass-ceramic (GC) scintillator strategically designed via controllable heat-treatment-induced crystallization. A sequential precipitation method is employed, where cubic CaF2 nanocrystals initially form, subsequently promoting heterogeneous nucleation and growth of hexagonal BaAl2Si2O8. Intrinsic nanoscale phase separation into F-rich and O-rich domains significantly reduces atomic diffusion distances, yielding an unprecedented crystallinity of up to 97.6%. Notably, defect traps (oxygen vacancy defects, likely located within the lattice or at crystalline/amorphous interfaces) enable efficient carrier capture and thermally stimulated release, contributing to remarkable resistance to thermal quenching. Consequently, the GC scintillator maintains 90.6% of its integrated X-ray excited luminescence (XEL) intensity at 300 °C, with the integrated XEL intensity reaching 94.2% of commercial Bi4Ge3O12 (BGO) at room temperature. This enables stable high-temperature X-ray imaging with a spatial resolution of ~10.4 lp mm−1 up to 225 °C. This work provides a versatile pathway for developing high-sensitivity scintillators for extreme-environment X-ray imaging.

Solvation regulation with Janus solvates for sustainable aqueous Zn ion batteries

The uncontrollable Zn dendrites and serious parasitic side reactions of the zinc anode severely impede the practical application of aqueous zinc-ion batteries. In this work, a unique strategy of multipoint solvate coordination center is proposed, which anchors Zn2+ and H2O with complex sites to establish an intermolecular connection within the asymmetric solvation structure. A hydrated deep eutectic electrolyte based on multi-site methylurea (MU) with Janus properties is developed, in which Zn2+ and H2O interact with MU through Lewis acid-base and hydrogen bonding interaction, and the regulated asymmetric solvation configuration can guide the (002)-ordered Zn deposition. Simultaneously, a small amount of polyethylene glycol (PEG, Mw=20000) can facilitate homogenous (002) Zn deposition by suppressing Zn2+ transfer kinetics. Benefiting from the rationally regulated solvation structure and PEG molecules adsorbed onto Zn anodes, the side reactions and Zn dendrites are significantly inhibited. As a result, the Zn||Zn symmetric cell delivers outstanding cycling performance over 3900 h (1 mA cm−2, 0.5 mA h cm−2). In addition, the Zn||V2O5 battery maintains 79.2% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 1 A g−1. The results suggest a promising oriented regulation strategy for sustainable aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Electron-Driven Processes for Sustained Dark Hydroxyl Radical Generation under Redox Fluctuations in Mangrove Soils

Hydroxyl radicals (·OH) generated via dark reactions under fluctuating redox conditions significantly influence pollutant degradation and elemental cycling, yet the key electron supply mechanisms driving their sustained production remain unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the electron-driven processes underlying sustained dark ·OH generation in mangrove soils under redox fluctuations. Simulated tidal redox cycles were conducted, and electron donating capacity (EDC), three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, and high-throughput sequencing were employed to analyze the dynamics of different Fe(II) species, key organic matter components, and microbial communities. Results demonstrated that, without exogenous electron donors, mangrove soils exhibited stable ·OH generation potential and EDC. During early redox cycles, total EDC of soil suspensions was dominated by reactive Fe(II), while the contribution of reduced organic matter increased over time, with solid-phase components accounting for 94.5%–97.6% of total EDC. Humic acids in soil organic matter facilitated reversible electron transfer via quinone functional groups, maintaining redox activity. Geothermobacter and Desulfobulbus were identified as dominant iron-reducing bacteria, likely key microorganisms for regenerating the "iron-organic matter" electron sources. This study reveals the mechanisms of endogenous electron donor regeneration and sustained dark ·OH generation mediated by iron and organic matter cycling in mangrove soils, providing theoretical support for understanding the long-term environmental effects of ·OH in tidal environments and its impact on biogeochemical cycles.

Aligned Ion Transport Design Advances High-Performance Moisture-Enabled Energy Harvesting and Multidirectional Sensing

Moisture-enabled energy harvesting technologies offer a promising route for self-powered strain sensing, yet conventional generators suffer from slow response, poor recovery, and limited multidirectional resolution. Here, we report a stretchable thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nanofiber moisture-enabled electric generator (MEG) with highly aligned ion channels. A carbon black/sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (CB/SDBS) layer is coated on the TPU membrane, while carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and acidified poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (HPSS) are applied on opposite sides, establishing lateral hydrophilicity and ion gradients to drive directional ion migration. The planar MEG is lightweight, flexible, and requires no fully covered electrodes, enabling conformity to complex deformations. The aligned channels reduce ion migration tortuosity, enhancing ion transport efficiency and flux. As a result, the aligned MEG (ATMEG) delivers 0.2 V and 0.51 μA cm−2 at ~90% relative humidity, corresponding to 400% and 287% enhancements compared with the unaligned MEG (UATMEG). The ATMEG also exhibits ultrafast response (0.16 s) and recovery (0.08 s). Utilizing its anisotropic characteristics, a multidirectional self-powered strain sensor is developed, capable of distinguishing both the amplitude and direction of human motion, demonstrating strong potential for adaptive wearable electronics and intelligent motion monitoring.

A metabolizable benzothiazole-based covalent organic framework nanodot enables photothermal-boosted cuproptosis for synergistic cancer therapy

Copper-based synergistic therapy integrating chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and cuproptosis holds promise for tumor treatment but faces clinical translation hurdles including long-term toxicity, low catalytic efficiency, off-target effects, and copper ion efflux. Here, we developed metabolizable ultrasmall benzothiazole-based covalent organic framework nanodots (COF NDs) via click condensation followed by liquid exfoliation. The dense donor-acceptor configurations confer a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 51.16%, while bisthiazole motifs enable specific Cu2+/Cu+ chelation (0.56:0.44), facile PEGylation, and mitochondrial targeting. These features enhance physiological stability and enable tumor-specific photothermal-catalytic synergy. Mitochondrial accumulation elevates intracellular copper to a critical threshold, inducing cuproptosis and suppressing tumor growth and metastasis. The NDs are efficiently excreted via renal and fecal pathways, demonstrating favorable biocompatibility and clinical potential as copper-based nanotherapeutics.
